Today we have the honor of interviewing Dr Warren Bradley, Founder at Hytro a leading blood flow restriction company.
Hytro is the world's first wearable Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) system designed specifically for sport. Trusted by 250+ sports teams across the NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, and The Premier League, Hytro’s patented BFR products enable coaches & athletes to integrate BFR within their existing work flows; warm-ups, training, recovery, and travel, without the need for supervision. Hytro turns cutting-edge BFR science into a simple and powerful tool for those who demand better: faster recovery, smarter training, and the edge to outperform. Here are the best quotes from the interview with Warren:
1. Your Background
“I’m the founder of Hytro, but before that I spent just over a decade working in professional sports. I was fortunate to work in international rugby with England Rugby, and in the Premier League with Hull City and several other teams. During that time, I also completed a PhD in Exercise Physiology. Essentially, I was wearing two hats: I was both a practitioner, working on the ground with athletes, and an academic researcher. That meant I was constantly questioning and critiquing the practices we used in club environments. One of the techniques I used frequently was blood flow restriction (BFR), especially for rehab. I loved the effects, but I found the devices too complex and impractical for widespread use. So I decided to invent a new, more user-friendly way of applying BFR. That led to the patented wearable BFR technology that became the foundation of Hytro.”
2. Your Company and Product
“Hytro was created to break down the barriers that were limiting BFR use to rehab-only applications. Blood flow restriction is one of the most well-researched techniques in sports science, with thousands of published papers supporting its benefits. But traditional BFR devices are app-based, pneumatic, wired, and frankly, cumbersome. You needed supervision to use them. What we did with Hytro was simplify the application by integrating BFR into wearables—shorts and shirts that athletes can easily wear on their own. We removed the tech clutter but embedded all the science and safety. That changed the game because now BFR could be used not just in rehab, but throughout the performance continuum—in warmups, in recovery, on flights, in ice baths, even during meetings. We now have global patents for this approach and are working with several hundred teams worldwide, including a growing footprint in the U.S. despite being a lean, agile company with just five or six full-time staff and high-quality fractional talent from brands like Nike and Gymshark.”
3. The Main Use Cases You Are Addressing
“At Hytro, we focus on what we call the performance continuum. While BFR is already well validated for rehab—muscle regeneration, bone remodeling, etc.—we see the bigger opportunity in supporting the 95% of athletes who are healthy and competing. The most common use case among our clients is recovery. Athletes use our shorts post-competition in the locker room, while taking in nutrition or attending a meeting. Many teams use them on game day plus one during recovery sessions—bike flushes, mobility work, ice baths. The beauty of our product is the user can choose when to strap in and apply pressure, making it extremely adaptable. Increasingly, we’re also seeing athletes use Hytro in ice baths, which is showing promising effects on recovery metrics. We’ve already completed one study with a UK pro soccer team and are conducting lab research to validate the physiological mechanisms, including muscle protein synthesis and inflammation markers. So in summary, teams are using Hytro for recovery, performance enhancement, and travel, not just rehab.”
4. The BFR Market and Main Trends
“The BFR market has been around for decades. And to be perfectly honest, until Hytro, everyone was doing the same thing just slightly better—refining cuffs, improving apps—but the basic delivery method stayed the same. The problem with that? It's not scalable. These systems still required supervision and could be risky if misapplied. What we did with Hytro was rethink the category. We built BFR directly into wearables, ensuring correct placement, safety, and ease of use. That’s what enabled mass adoption across full squads. Traditional BFR devices mainly served rehab and return to play. We’ve opened up applications across training, recovery, and travel. Our innovation wasn’t just in the science—it was in the deployment and accessibility.”
5. The Benefits for Teams to Use Your Product
“The core benefit is that BFR, when applied properly, magnifies the physiological stress of whatever you're doing. For example, walking with BFR feels like sprinting to your muscles. A bodyweight squat feels like a weighted squat. This means you can get a greater training stimulus in less time or with lower loads. That’s massive for athletes who are already heavily loaded. In academy settings, say you have a 17-year-old who needs to build mass—BFR lets you add effective training volume without overloading joints or the nervous system. You can do a 15-minute low-load session with no muscle tearing, only cell swelling, and still get hypertrophy benefits. Similarly, if an athlete is lagging in endurance but you can’t add more intense sessions, BFR lets them do light pedaling on a bike while still driving adaptations like mitochondrial biogenesis. It’s efficient, low-impact, and doesn’t compromise recovery. That’s the real value: more output with less load and less fatigue.”
6. Your Competitive Advantages
“Our biggest competitive advantage is how simple and safe our product is. BFR traditionally required precise placement, tech devices, and supervision. With Hytro, it’s just a pair of shorts or a shirt. You strap in and go. It takes seconds. That means teams can scale use across full squads. You don’t need staff hovering over every athlete to get the dose right. And because we’ve validated our pressure settings through lab testing, we’ve built in fail-safes that prevent athletes from over-pressurizing. Even the most inexperienced user can use Hytro safely. That’s something other systems simply don’t offer. Also, we focus heavily on integration and education. We don’t just ship a product—we help teams figure out how it fits into their existing workflow. That’s critical. No matter how good the tech is, if it doesn’t fit the team’s daily rhythm, it won’t get used.”
7. What Teams Like About Your Product
“Teams love the ease of implementation. Take the Atlanta Falcons as an example. In their gym, they have huge screens that display the day’s Hytro protocols. Players walk in, grab the shorts that were left on their pegs by the kitman, and just follow the instructions. There’s no complicated setup, no wires, no waiting. It’s frictionless. Coaches know they’re getting a proven dose of BFR that’s safe and effective.
Beyond that, what really resonates with teams is our support and education. We sit down with them, review their schedules and training blocks, and help them figure out the best way to incorporate Hytro. We tailor our onboarding to make sure it fits seamlessly into what they’re already doing. And often what we hear is: ‘We love BFR, but with our old system we couldn’t scale it to the whole team.’ With Hytro, now they can.”
8. Your Business Model
“Our approach is highly consultative. We always start with a discovery call, where we learn about the team’s current workflow, needs, and pain points. From there, we make a recommendation that aligns with their goals. Some teams, like NFL franchises, might start with a pilot of 30 units, and once they see the value, they roll it out across the entire team with 150 units or more. Our recommended retail price is $349 for shorts and about $60 less for the shirts. But we provide volume discounts and work case by case. We also make it easy to get started—you can find booking links on our website and LinkedIn. We want to educate and support, not just sell.”
9. Your Plans for the Next 12 Months
“We’ve been fortunate to be backed by a growing group of coaches and athletes who believe in our mission—from NFL stars to Formula 1 drivers. Some of our clients have even invested in the company. As for what’s next, we’re focused on scaling across U.S. and European pro leagues and the collegiate market. We’ve hired new sales staff in the U.S., and they’re doing an amazing job already.
At the same time, we’re preparing to enter the consumer market. We’re working with Tour de France cycling teams to produce research and content that shows everyday cyclists how they can use Hytro to increase their functional threshold power or peak power output. It’s about translating elite insights to everyday performance. So, pro sports and colleges are the focus now, but we’re setting the stage for a broader direct-to-consumer offering in the very near future.”
