Last month we announced the Upside Tech Scouting platform, the world’s first platform providing granular anonymized team data on specific teams (NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA, Premier League, Laliga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, national teams, Olympic teams, pro rugby, pro tennis..). The response from teams, vendors and VCs exceeded our highest expectations. We plan to soon announce new valuable features on our new Upside tech scouting platform. We also plan to publish frequent “special” reports where we will analyze specific trends by sports, leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, NHL, Premier League..) based on the anonymized team data that we gathered through our new Upside scouting platform. Stay tuned!

Here is a video explaining how the platform works with video testimonials from teams (NBA, MLS, Premier league..) and vendors.
With that being said, April 2023 was another great month for all the sports enthusiasts. In pro soccer, in the MLS, the New England Revolutions are now leading the Eastern division (6-3-1), ahead of Cincinnati (7-3-1), Nashville SC (5-3-3) and the Atlanta United (5-3-3) while St Louis (6-2-3) are leading the Western conference, ahead of the Seattle Sounders (6-2-3) and LAFC (5-3-1).
In the Premier League, Manchester City fc (82 pts) took the lead from Arsenal fc (81 pts) in the league, ahead of Newcastle fc (65 pts).
FIFA is prepared to kick broadcasts of the Women’s World Cup out of Europe if it doesn’t get its price. “It is our moral and legal obligation not to undersell the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in an Instagram post, echoing statements he made at the World Trade Organization in Geneva.
Infantino described offers from Europe’s “Big 5” countries — England, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy — as “very disappointing,” pointing out that while the women’s tournament draws “50-60%” of the viewership garnered by the men’s edition, broadcasters “offer only $1 million to $10 million” for the women’s competition, as opposed to “$100-200 million for the men’s.”
In the world of pro basketball, in the NBA playoffs, in the Eastern semi conference finals, the Celtics and Sixers are tied 2-2, while the Miami Heat are leading 2-1 against the NY Knicks. In the Western semi conference finals, the LA Lakers are leading 2-1 against the Warriors, while the Denver Nuggets and Suns are tied 2-2 in their series.
In the world of American Football, Aaron Rodgers got officially traded to the Jets. The Ravens and Lamar Jackson agreed to terms and the deal reportedly makes Jackson the highest-paid player in NFL history with a five-year, $260 million deal. The 2023 NFL draft also took place on April 27-29. It was the 88th edition and was held near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. The Carolina Panthers selected QB Bryce Young as the first pick in the draft after trading with the Chicago Bears .
In the world of pro rugby, Ireland sustained its No. 1 spot in the men's World Rugby rankings followed by France (2), New Zealand (3), South Africa (4) and Scotland (5).
In the world of pro baseball, the MLB season started. The Rays are leading the AL East division (28-7), ahead of the Orioles (22-12) while the Braves (24-11) are ahead of the NY Mets (17-18) in the NL East division. The Pirates are leading the NL Central division (20-15), ahead of the Brewers (19-15) while the LA Dodgers (21-14) are ahead of the Diamondbacks (19-15) in the NL West division.
In the world of pro golf, the PGA Tour are also "willing to change" their newly implemented elevated event schedule according to one of the American-based circuit's biggest names Xander Schauffele. The Tour implemented the changes at the beginning of the 2023 campaign, giving 17 tournaments 'elevated' or 'designated' status. The upgrade has seen the 17 selected events receiving an increase in prize funds, with an average of $20M on offer at each.
The new schedule was seemingly put in place in response to the threat of their rivals LIV Golf, who have been able to lure in a whole host of Tour players with mega-money signing fees and prize pots. The LIV golf league is also allegedly looking to launch a women league soon.
In the world of pro tennis, The world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz beat the lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the Madrid Open final yesterday to defend last year’s title and win his fourth ATP Tour trophy of the year and his 10th overall. Andrey Rublev also held off teenager Holger Rune 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to win the Monte Carlo tennis Masters. Lastly Serena Williams confirmed she is pregnant with her second child at the Met Gala.
In the world of pro hockey, the NHL playoffs are now in full swing. The Hurricane lead 2-0 against the Devils while the Panthers lead 3-0 against the Mapple Leafs. The Kraken are leading 2-1 against the Dallas Stars while the Golden Knights and Oilers are also tied 1-1. Snoop Dogg is also hopping on a collab for the Ottawa Senators. The 51-year-old rapper took to Instagram to declare he’s part of a bidding group led by Los Angeles-based businessman Neko Sparks, who seeks to become the first Black controlling owner in NHL history.
In the AR/VR/NFT/Metaverse/Crypto/Blockchain space, the NHL launched a Roblox experience to reach new and younger fans. Nike also unveiled new virtual Air Force 1 collection via .Swoosh web3 platform. Sports Illustrated Tickets is launching a ‘Box Office’, NFT based ticketing and event management platform for the sports industry. The publishing company launched SI Tickets in 2021, hoping to use the strength of its brand to inspire consumer confidence in the secondary ticket market.

Adidas is also pushing ahead with the ‘third phase’ of its Web 3.0 roadmap, hoping its new ‘ALTs’ NFTs will unlock a valuable new revenue stream and drive loyalty amongst consumers. The sportswear giant first launched its ‘Into the Metaverse’ collection in December 2021, selling out the initial drop of 30,000 NFTs and generating $22M.

The Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) also turned their Arena into an AR Arcade game. The NBA team partnered with fan engagement platform ARound to transform their home stadium into an augmented reality (AR) powered multiplayer arcade.

In the world of AI/Genrative AI, Apple is reportedly developing an AI-powered health coaching service. The upcoming German sport streaming service Dyn Media also teamed up with WSC Sports to offer artificial intelligence-powered video content. In the NCAA, the ACCDN is using AI powered content to increase the fan engagement. The MLS has partnered with technology company Ai.io in a move the competition hopes will enable it to “identify and reach every kid playing soccer in North America”. The agreement will help provide aspiring players with the chance to be scouted by MLS for free through the use of computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI).

Research last month by Deutsche Bank also showed that total global corporate investment into AI has grown 150% since 2019 to nearly $180 billion (€164 billion), and nearly 30-fold since 2013. The number of public AI projects rose to nearly 350,000 by end of last year, with more than 140,000 patents filed for AI technology alone in 2021. The French Parliament also adopted a bill to use AI video surveillance at the Paris 2024 Olympics
In the world of sports performance and wearables, Huawei Watch 4 announcement is coming this month. Afon also took on Apple in the race to a non-invasive glucose tracker. Select Samsung smartwatches will also soon be able to connect with Peloton’s equipment in the latest expansion of the latter’s connected fitness ecosystem. The Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 4 devices will have access to the Peloton watch app, which connects directly to Peloton’s Bike, Bike+, Tread, Row, and Guide. Lastly, Oppo could be working on a smartwatch that can measure blood pressure.
In the world of sports tech investments, investments in April 2023 reached $259.9M. 55% of funding came from fitness startups. This was up from +580% ($38.2M) in March 2023.

🔗 The NHL launches Roblox experience to reach new and younger fans | Via: SP
The National Hockey League (NHL) has become the latest major sports property to launch a virtual experience on the Roblox platform. ‘NHL Blast’ is available immediately, and allows fans to participate in five-on-five hockey games and socialise with other players using digital avatars.
The experience will eventually offer animated recreations of key moments from real life NHL matches using data captured by the league’s puck and player tracking (PPT) systems and visualized by Sony Sports’ immersive content specialist Beyond Sports.
⬆️ The Upside: This should not come as a surprise to see the NHL teaming up with Roblox to enter the metaverse. Other major US sports teams have done that before them. That being said we don’t believe that the NHL will convert a large amount of NHL fans to the Roblox platform and monetize it in a big way. For us it seems more like a check mark than anything else. You can check out our full analysis on the NFT sports market (trends, vendor ecosystem, recommendations to teams) here. You can also check out our sports metaverse ecosystem analysis here.
🔗Nike unveils new virtual Air Force 1 collection via .Swoosh web3 platform | Via : The Drum
Nike is stepping further into the world of web3 and virtual fashion. This morning, the athletic gear brand announced that .Swoosh, its web3 platform which launched in beta in November, will soon release its first collection of digital sneakers. Dubbed Our Force 1 (OF1), the new collection is “a tribute to the first 50 years of Nike and an homage to the creativity and versatility of the Air Force 1,” the company wrote in a blog post.
First released in 1982 and named after the flight service used by US presidents, the Nike Air Force 1 (AF1) was originally designed as a basketball shoe and has since arguably become one of the most iconic shoe models in history. Last year – the 40th anniversary of the shoe's debut – a collection of Louis Vuitton-branded Air Force 1s created by the late designer Virgil Abloh reportedly sold on Sotheby’s for a cumulative price of more than $25.3m, with a single pair selling for nearly $353,000.
⬆️ The Upside: We think this is the result of Nike’s acquisition of RTFKT for a sum thought to be in excess of $1 billion. In February 2021, RTFKT shocked the world for the first time by selling$3.1 million MM $2.2855 worth of NFT sneakers in just JST $0.02596 seven minutes. Nike is leveraging RTFKT’s technology and expertise here. You can check out our full analysis on the NFT sports market (trends, vendor ecosystem, recommendations to teams) here. ⌚ Huawei Watch 4 announcement is coming this month | Via : Wareable
The Huawei Watch 4 will be unveiled as part of a special event later this month, ushering in the next generation of the company's smartwatch line. That's according to the latest whispers doing the rounds on Weibo, at least, with leaker Uncle Mountain suggesting the smartwatch will launch at a 17 May event alongside various new Huawei laptops and tablets.
It's rumored that Huawei's upcoming 9 May event in Munich won't include the Watch 4 series, with this instead being saved for the company's China 17 May unveiling. According to the leaker, who has a decent track record of predicting Huawei's upcoming moves, there will also be at least two versions of the device, too. This would align with the strategy the company employed with the Watch 3 series, which has received countless different releases since initially arriving in 2021, including the GT 3 Pro and GT Runner.
⬆️ The Upside: We think this is great move by Huawei. We expect Huawei to leverage its traditional low cost strategy to try to gain share in the highly competitive smartwatch market. That being said we don’t expect this new watch to offer any unique features (BP, hydration monitoring…). Of note, the revenue in the Smartwatches segment is projected to reach $44.91B in 2023. User penetration will be 2.74% in 2023 and is expected to hit 2.89% by 2027.

⌚ Afon takes on Apple in the race to a non-invasive glucose tracker | Via : Wareable
Afon, the UK-based company that’s leading the charge for a non-invasive wrist-based glucose tracker, has announced it's close to commercializing its wearable device, after successful clinical trials. The company has been conducting trials in Germany, and says that its device has been proven capable of tracking glucose levels non-invasively, and passed a big hurdle on the way to getting its device to market. Unlike most wearables and health trackers, it's not a dedicated smartwatch. The Afon glucose tracker sits under the wrist and can be added to existing watch straps and worn with smartwatches, or even classic wristwatches..
⬆️ The Upside: This should not come as a surprise to see other competitors emerging in the non invasive glucose monitoring market. We expect the level of competition to accelerate when Apple officially enters the market. This will fuel pricing competition. The global continuous glucose monitoring devices market was estimated to be valued at $7,816.8M in 2022 and is estimated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.4% from 2023 to 2030.

⌚ Oppo could be working on a smartwatch that can measure blood pressure | Via : Wareable
An Oppo smartwatch that can measure blood pressure may be in the works, with a new patent suggesting the company is looking at the health feature. The recently published filing, available to view through the China National Intellectual Property Administration, details a wrist-based wearable that consists of two separate bands, entitled 'Blood Pressure Measurement Device'.
Both appear to attach to a main central unit - one that may even feature a small display - with two identification zones present on the straps designed to take the measurement. It's not totally clear how exactly this process would actually work, but it's possible the bands would mimic a traditional blood pressure cuff and determine the measurement by inflating.
⬆️ The Upside: We think this is great news for the industry. Trying to continuously monitor blood pressure via a wearable device has been the holy grail for many startups. other startups in the space includes startups like Valencell and Blumio. There is a major opportunity for those startups to value a big market as long as the level of accuracy of those devices is high. Of note, the global blood pressure monitoring devices market size was estimated at $4.5B in 2022 and is projected to expand further at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4% from 2023 to 2030.

📊 Key Tech Sports Stats of The Month
$90B: The global sports technology market generated US$90 billion in disclosed deal value from more than 1000 partnerships last year, according to Drake Star Partners’ Global Sports Tech Report for 2022.
$6.2B: British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly emerged as the highest bidder for Manchester United. The Ineos Group CEO has offered more than $6.2 billion to buy the Premier League club, according to the Daily Telegraph. Ratcliffe is bidding against Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, whose final offer reportedly also eclipsed $6.2 billion and promised to erase Manchester United’s $620 million in debt, according to The Times of India.
$5.82B: Adidas’ Yeezy crisis has hit the company hard — but its first-quarter financials were not as bad as expected. The sportswear giant reported $5.82 billion in Q1 2023 revenue — a 1% dip from $5.85 billion a year prior. Those numbers actually outperformed projections from financial analysts, who expected a 4% drop, according to consensus estimates compiled by the company. Adidas also reported that it had an operating profit of $66.19 million, which beat analyst projections by $16.55 million.
Since cutting ties with Ye — formerly known as Kanye West — in October due to the rapper’s public antisemitic remarks, Adidas has been struggling to figure out what to do with the mountain of unsold Yeezy sneakers in its inventory. CEO Bjørn Gulden admitted that the loss of the Yeezy brand is “of course hurting us.”
$5.4B: La Liga’s revenues have inched past pre-pandemic levels after recent seasons of financial struggles. Spain’s top soccer clubs are expected to post a combined profit at the end of this season, according to Bloomberg. Net income for teams in La Liga Santander and La Liga SmartBank reached $30 million for the 2022-23 season following a loss of $154 million last season for Spain’s top two competitions. Total revenue for La Liga this season is expected to reach $5.39 billion, just surpassing its $5.37 billion total from 2018-19 — the last season before COVID-19 forced fan capacity restrictions inside stadiums.
$1.7B: MLB hasn’t tried to hide the fact that it wants to add two teams — and another group is pitching a city and a concept. A group led by former NBA executive Pat Williams is looking to start a team in Orlando, a pitch including a $1.7 billion stadium funded in part by $975 million from tourist taxes. The group, which calls the proposed team “The Dreamers,” also wants to build 1,000 hotel rooms adjacent to the stadium.
$1.54B: The Buffalo Bills are finally getting their new stadium. With the Erie County legislature approving the final $250 million for the $1.54 billion project on Thursday, the team said construction will “begin immediately.” The new stadium will be built next door to Highmark Stadium. The Erie County legislature also extended the lease at Highmark, set to expire this summer, on Thursday. The new facility is expected to be completed in time for the 2026 season.
$1.5B: Barcelona have secured almost €1.5 billion in financing to press ahead with the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou, the club announced recently. Barca had set an initial deadline of March 31 to finalize the funding for the project, but a rise in global interest rates led to some delays in the final stages of the negotiations.
$1B: Snoop Dogg is hopping on a collab for the Ottawa Senators. The 51-year-old rapper took to Instagram Monday to declare he’s part of a bidding group led by Los Angeles-based businessman Neko Sparks, who seeks to become the first Black controlling owner in NHL history. A group including actor and Wrexham FC co-owner Ryan Reynolds is preparing to make a $1 billion for the Sens, while Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé is part of another.
$381M: With another strong start to the Formula 1 season, Liberty Media continues to evolve. In its quarterly financial results, Liberty Media reported that Formula One Group brought in $381 million in total revenue for Q1 2023 — a 6% year-over-year increase from 2022 ($360M). However, the group’s operating income decreased slightly year-over-year from $19 million to $16 million due to a $4 million increase in corporate expenses. Liberty execs are focusing on the positives, though.
150%: Research last month by Deutsche Bank showed that total global corporate investment into AI has grown 150% since 2019 to nearly $180 billion (€164 billion), and nearly 30-fold since 2013. The number of public AI projects rose to nearly 350,000 by end of last year, with more than 140,000 patents filed for AI technology alone in 2021.
50 points: Stephen Curry scored a playoff career-high 50 points and answered time and again to will the defending champions on in their quest for a repeat, Kevon Looney grabbed 21 rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors advanced to the Western Conference semifinals by beating the Sacramento Kings 120-100 in Sunday’s winner-take-all Game 7.
5%: Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy described its fiscal quarter as the best he has seen with the company, but investors were left cold. The connected fitness giant booked $748.9 million in the fiscal third quarter ending March 31, missing analyst expectations and causing the company’s stock to tumble 13.5% on Thursday. Peloton lost an unexpectedly large $275.9 million in the quarter as it continues to struggle with supply chain issues and slackening demand following the end of pandemic closures. McCarthy touted the company’s 5% year-over-year uptick in connected fitness subscribers, but acknowledged that growth in that category tends to dip in Peloton’s fiscal fourth quarter — and he expects the same to happen this year.
